WooCommerce vs Shopify is the first decision for almost every new online store. I build on both, and neither one is always better. The right choice depends on your products, your market, your budget, and how much control you want.
The Short Answer
- Choose Shopify if you want a hosted platform, a fast setup, and you are happy working within its app ecosystem.
- Choose WooCommerce if you want full ownership, deep customization, content-heavy SEO, or integrations with your own systems.
Now the details.
Ownership and Control
WooCommerce is a free, open-source plugin that runs on your own WordPress hosting. You own the code, the data, and the server. You can change anything.
Shopify is a hosted service. It handles hosting and security for you, but you work within its rules, its checkout, and its apps.
Costs and Fees
Shopify charges a monthly subscription. Paid apps add up quickly, and if you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top of the gateway’s fee. Check Shopify’s current pricing page for exact numbers in your country.
WooCommerce has no platform fee. You pay for hosting, a domain, any premium extensions, and development. Payment processors still charge their normal fees.
For small stores, the costs are often close. As sales grow, avoiding platform transaction fees can make WooCommerce cheaper, but only if the store is built and hosted well.
Customization
This is where WooCommerce wins clearly. Custom product fields, B2B pricing, product configurators, stock sync with a warehouse or ERP through the REST API, custom checkout rules: with a developer, WooCommerce can be shaped to fit your business exactly.
Shopify can be customized through themes, Liquid templates, and apps, but deeper changes to checkout and data structure are more restricted, especially on lower plans.
SEO and Content
Both platforms can rank well. WooCommerce has an edge for content-driven SEO because it sits on WordPress, the strongest blogging platform, with tools like Yoast SEO. You get full control over URLs, schema, and site structure.
Payments and Local Markets
This matters a lot outside North America. Shopify Payments is not available in every country. WooCommerce works with a very wide range of gateways: Stripe, PayPal, Square, Visa and Mastercard processing through banks, Apple Pay and Google Pay, buy now pay later services, regional gateways across the Middle East and Europe, and custom gateways built on any provider’s API. See my guide to WooCommerce payment gateway integration.
Multilingual and RTL Stores
Selling in German and English, or Arabic and English? WooCommerce with WPML handles translated products, categories, and checkout, including right-to-left Arabic layouts. Shopify supports multiple languages too, but complex RTL design customization is often easier on WordPress.
Maintenance
Shopify handles updates and hosting. WooCommerce needs regular plugin updates, backups, and security monitoring. That is a real cost, and it is why a maintenance plan makes sense for any serious WooCommerce store.
Which One Should You Choose?
Go with Shopify if:
- You want to launch quickly with a standard store.
- You do not need unusual features or integrations.
- You prefer paying a monthly fee over managing hosting.
Go with WooCommerce if:
- You want full ownership of your store and data.
- You need custom features, B2B rules, or system integrations.
- Content marketing and SEO are central to your growth.
- You sell in markets where Shopify Payments is not available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is WooCommerce free?
The plugin is free. Hosting, a domain, premium extensions, and development are not.
Which is faster, WooCommerce or Shopify?
Shopify is fast by default because it is hosted and managed. WooCommerce can be just as fast with good hosting, a lightweight theme, and proper caching.
Can I switch later?
Yes, products, customers, and orders can be migrated either way, but it is easier to choose well from the start.
